VMware Fault Tolerance, a new feature of VMware Virtual Infrastructure 4, provides the highest level on High Availability to Virtual Machines in the Virtual Infrastructure. Fault tolerance, in basic terms, creates a clone of a running virtual machine using VMotion technology. This then replicates, in real time, changes made on the primary virtual machine to the secondary virtual machine. Both virtual machines have the same IP address and the same MAC address.

Ok, so we've looked at installing VMware ESX 3.5 on the ML110 G5. Now it's time to look at installing ESXi 3.5 Installable on the HP Proliant ML110 G5.
This should all work well, providing that you have the correct storage controller settings specified in the BIOS setup of the server.
To install ESXi 3.5 on the ML110 G5, follow these easy steps:
VMware ESX 3.5 update 2 is the first hypervisor to be listed under the Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program, providing VMware customers who run Windows Server and Microsoft applications with access to cooperative support from Microsoft and VMware.
The announcement came from VMware on 3 September 2008.
“Virtualization is now well within the IT mainstream and our relationship with Microsoft underscores how far virtualization has come by providing VMware ESX users with access to valuable support for their virtualized Microsoft applications,” said Bogomil Balkansky, senior director of product marketing, VMware. “VMware and Microsoft are working cooperatively to help ensure that our joint customers can employ the benefits of virtualization along with the peace of mind that professional product support can provide.”
As of VMware VirtualCenter 2.5 Update 1, ESX Server 3i systems can only be added to an HA cluster if the system has swap enabled.
This article applies to:
- VMware ESXi 3.5.x Embedded
- VMware ESXi 3.5.x Installable
- VMware VirtualCenter 2.5.x
ESX 3i Servers with swap not enabled will show the following message(s):
An error occured during configuration of the HA agent of the host.
HA Agent has an error : Host in HA cluster must have userworld swap enabled.
To enable swap on the ESX 3i Server:
Just a quick update on my earlier posts regarding ESX 3.5 on the HP ProLiant ML110 G5 and the HP Proliant ML115 G5. I have now been informed by posts on http://www.techhead.co.uk/ that the embedded NIC in these servers are now supported by VMware ESX Server 3.5 Update 2.
I have not tried to install ESX 3.5 Update 2 on these servers, so I can't speak from my own experience just yet, but information can be found here.
